Purchasing ENERGY STAR Products

What is ENERGY STAR?

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that helps individuals and businesses save money and protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. The EPA continually increases the stringency of the performance specifications, raising the standards manufacturers must meet to earn this seal.

Join us in promoting energy conservation at Cornell.

Learn More

Visit the ENERGY STAR website to see for yourself how using these certified products can lead to energy-cost savings.

If you have questions about how and why to purchase ENERGY STAR products, please contact Cornell Procurement Services.

To meet the goals outlined in the university's Climate Action Plan, we are committed to make a focused effort in all areas where it exists, to purchase products that are Energy Star certified or that are in the upper 25% of energy efficiency as designated by the Federal Energy Management Program. Examples of such products include computers, appliances, electronic equipment, and food service equipment.

Savings

ENERGY STAR-labeled products meet a high standard for energy efficiency backed by the Environmental Protection Agency. By making a concerted effort to select products with this rating, purchasers can expect to see energy use reduced by 20 to 30 percent over products without this rating.

How to Find ENERGY STAR Certified Products

  • Look for the ENERGY STAR logo on products you buy, or read product descriptions and specifications carefully.
  • Utilize e-SHOP filters to search for "energy efficiency" or ENERGY STAR certification. These new flags in e-SHOP allow you to search for identified sustainable and certified products.
  • Visit the ENERGY STAR website to see a list of certified products.
