Contractor/Vendor Minimum Insurance Requirements

All contractors, vendors or service providers providing services to or doing work on Cornell’s premises are required to have insurance. Contractors/Vendors are required to submit evidence of insurance prior to the commencement of service and/or the start of the agreement.

The following minimum insurance standards shall apply to all contractors/vendors doing business with Cornell University. If a product or service, in the opinion of Risk Management and Insurance, represents an unusual or exceptional risk, additional insurance for that product or service may be required.

Statutory Worker’s Compensation Insurance under the laws of the State of New York and any other laws that may be applicable thereto. Coverage “B” Employers Liability must have limits of at least $1,000,000 per accident for bodily injury and disease.

Commercial General Liability Insurance, subject to at least limits of $1,000,000 each occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate. Coverage must be provided for Bodily Injury Liability, Broad Form Property Damage Liability, Contractual Liability and Products and Completed Operations coverage.

Automobile Liability Insurance subject to limits of not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit for each accident. Such Automobile Liability Insurance shall be for all owned, non-owned, and hired automobiles.

For Charter Bus Companies, the minimum Automobile Liability Insurance required is $5,000,000.

For Watercraft Transportation/Excursion Services, the minimum Protection and Indemnity insurance subject to limits of not less than $2,000,000 each occurrence and $5,000,000 aggregate. Coverage must be provided for Bodily Injury Liability, Broad Form Property Damage Liability, Contractual Liability, and coverage for the Jones Act.  The policies shall be primary and non-contributory, and Cornell University shall be included as an additional. Please contact the Office of Risk Management directly for other requirements, waivers, and further guidance.

Umbrella/Excess Liability Insurance subject to limits of not less than $5,000,000 per occurrence and follow-form of the primary General Liability, Automobile Liability, and Employers Liability policies.

All Risk Property Insurance providing replacement cost coverage for any property damage to Contractor’s property which is caused by a loss of any kind and description to any property brought onto Cornell University premises.

Professional Liability/Errors & Omissions subject to $1,000,000 per claim/$3,000,000 aggregate covering the activities of the Contractor.

Liquor Liability (based on scope of work) with a minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence.

Crime Insurance (based on scope of work) with a minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence.

Environmental Liability (based on scope of work) with a minimum of $5,000,000 per occurrence. The coverage must be maintained during the term of the agreement and at least three (3) years following its completion.

Cyber and Technology Products & Services Liability insurance (based on scope of work) with limits of not less than $5,000,000 for each wrongful act.

Contractors are required to verify that all subcontractors maintain insurance meeting all the requirements stated herein.

Sexual Abuse and Molestation coverage must be included in any service agreement involving minors in an amount no less than $2,000,000 per occurrence is required and the coverage shall not include an employee exclusion. However prior approval from the Office of Risk Management and Insurance is required.

Cornell reserves the right to modify these requirements, including limits, based on the nature of the risk, prior experience, insurer, coverage, or other special/unique circumstances.
