Technical Instructions

Note: Consult with your technical support staff before making any changes to your system.

Supported Browsers

  • Internet Explorer (IE) 6.02 (preferred) or earlier
  • Netscape version 4.06 or later

Netscape users may have difficulty loading the exam. We suggest that using Internet Explorer. The exams will not run on a Mac.

Tutorial Speed/Memory/Pop-Up Blocker/Graphics

To help prevent difficulties relating to speed of loading and memory, quit ALL other programs that may be running (especially EUDORA).

Please turn off pop-up blocker software. These tutorials will not start if you are running pop-up blocker software.

If you have been viewing a considerable amount of graphics before running the exam and you experience problems with this tutorial, you should restart your machine.  You  should also clear the temporary files stored in your browser.  To do this in Internet Explorer, in your browser's menu, go to Tools, and then Internet Options.  On the "General" tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Files."

Acceptable Java Versions

We suggest you use the Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) for Java to run this application.

Determine if the settings of the machine that you are using are acceptable.

If you have turned off Java or JavaScript on your browser, this program will not function properly. To change the Java or JavaScript settings for Internet Explorer, in your browser's menu, go to Tools, and then Internet Options.  On the "Advanced" tab, check all boxes for Microsoft VM or Java (Sun).  You may need to restart for changes to take effect.

If you use the Microsoft Windows operating system, we recommend that you download and install the original Microsoft VM.

Microsoft Virtual Machine (.ZIP file, 4.87 MB)

For ToolBook 2004, other officially supported versions of the Sun Microsystems Java VM (JVM) are available.

Note: Version 1.4.2 has been known to occasionally cause Internet Explorer to produce a general protection fault error upon exiting a LMS-launched course.

If you are having problems using a different version of Sun Microsystems JVM, we recommend using one of the above versions instead, or switch to Microsoft VM.

End-User Setup Issues

Because several PC users have indicated that they do not see the text at the bottom of the screen in the tutorials, we recommend that the monitor's screen resolution be set to 1024 x 768, small font. To change your settings, open the Control Panel, select "Display," and then the "Settings" tab.  Change the font size from large fonts to small fonts (96dpi for XP).

Some monitor color depth settings have difficulty handling the quick changes in pages that the tutorial loads. If you see distorted colors, simply minimize the screen, then bring it back up, and it should be fine. Color depth settings may be changed, but we suggest you consult with your technical support staff before making any changes.
