These volunteers put in a lot of time and effort outside of their regular responsibilities to organize events, do all the behind the scenes work, and man the events as they happen for the DFA staff to enjoy. They also get criticism when things don't go exactly how others feel they should have. So for their volunteer efforts and their work to improve morale, I would like to nominate them for "Catch a Star"!
Nominated for contributions in the areas of commitment to excellence, respect, and teamwork, which support our division values. Steve Lutter, Cathy Salino, and Marcia Page had the following comments.
"Early in August 2005, Jeff Coville (Sparky) volunteered to step up and do more and accepted the role of PC Support team leader. Since that time, we have enjoyed Jeff's cheerful customer-oriented focus. He shows the attitude 'why put off a problem until tomorrow when I can solve it today?'
"Jeff's customer service attitude is exemplary. He keeps cool under pressure, isn't satisfied if something is left undone, never makes excuses, and most importantly, really enjoys being as responsive as possible to clients. He genuinely respects the work we do and understands that we are in a partnership to accomplish the goals of the Division. I have seen him act in the role of mediator when we experienced difficulties with accounts payable check printing problems. Jeff had no responsibility to solve this problem, but was able to step in and offer intelligent suggestions that helped us reach resolution.
"He is often seen hurrying through the office on the way to solve another customer's problem. It is a pleasure to be the 'customer' with Jeff around to solve the problems. If it takes more than five minutes, he doesn't want to keep you from working. He will schedule a time when you won't be using the computer to resolve problems or complete an unusual setup. He has a 'can-do' attitude that encourages others as well."
Third Round Recipients
Nominated for contributions in the area of commitment to excellence, teamwork, truth, and respect, which support out division values. “What a pleasure it is to work with Sharon. There have been many outstanding issues on our expiring NSF cooperative agreement. Both my Finance Coordinator, and myself have attempted countless times to have stops placed on accounts, accounts closed out, etc. As I understand it, Sharon is currently covering in this area. She came in and in just a matter of a couple of days had everything neat and tidy. I truly appreciate her efforts, and it is a pleasure to send requests up, get a response back, and know that items are being dealt with. Kudos to Sharon”! In addition the nominator listed the values of respect and truth. “Sharon saw a problem and she took measures to correct it. She has respect for the reputation of the department and the division and while she could have ignored the problem that caused her to step up, she chose to tell the truth and confront it. She was able to work with our supervisor and the other accountant to find a solution so that this does not happen in the future. This makes the individual, the department and the division stronger because of her efforts”.
Nominated for contributions in the area of commitment to excellence, respect and teamwork, which support out division values. “Camila’s extra effort and teamwork in handling customers during the W-2 and 1042s tax season was outstanding. Camila is a new member of the Payroll Office, having only been hired in August of 2005. She works the front desk and has managed to handle some difficult times with W-2 and 1042s reissues while juggling all her regular work and learning new tasks in the department. This season has presented a number of difficult customer situations due to errors on 1042s causing confused recipients. Camila works well in a team to handle customers and their questions in a professional and respectful manner. Camila has worked hard at learning her new responsibilities, asking the right questions and handling the customers efficiently, leaving the rest of the department able to concentrate on their normal work”.
Nominated for contributions in the area of commitment to excellence, respect and teamwork, which support out division values. “Taina graciously and willingly offered her time and expertise to help us meet a deadline for the expanded financials project. She was able to produce a quality product in an extremely efficient manner”. “Our group has recently "reorganized", losing a manager to Kuali and a staff member to CIT. The two of us remaining, do not currently have the skillset to produce the report that Taina has created for us. When Taina understood the complexity of our project before it even got to the production process, she showed respect for our work and offered to help. She was able to create the document we needed accurately and quickly and save us hours of work involved in learning new software and then learning to use it effectively. She knew all the tricks that we would have struggled with or missed in our race to meet the deadline. By doing what she knows so well, she spared us added stress during an already stressful time. We are forever thankful”.

Fourth Round Recipient
Nominated for contributions in the area of commitment to excellence, teamwork, truth, and respect, which support out division values. “Kathy has been a dedicated employee for many years in Sponsored Program Services - Preaward. As an Administrative Assistant, she not only had done her work as stated in her job description, she has gone above that and done work that falls under a Grant and Contract Officer description. I can honestly say that Kathy can read and input an FDP as well, if not better, than some GCO's in our office. She has found mistakes and corrected them and if she is uncertain about something, she is not afraid to ask. Normally she is correct in her findings. When Kathy is low on work, she is not afraid to ask for something to do or ask her colleagues if they need help. Kathy is always willing to learn something new and likes a challenge. She does not like to be idle and do what ever is asked of her to stay busy. Kathy is one of the rare in the Administrative Assistant role in SPS and I value her work ethics tremendously. For this, I feel Kathy should be recognized for the all the hard work and dedication she has given”.
